This is a detail painting based off of the earlier sketch. I am still trying to add some more bits of technology to make the character a bit less "high fantasy", or pure tribal. I am not sure that this has been a successful design and am considering heavily revamping the concept. Its always difficult trying to do an entirely realistic character, maintaining a logical feel to their design, and still coming out with something compelling. I tend to get lost in designing details, and forget about the whole of figure. Gestalt theory anyone?

  1. Hey Man, I think I overheard you and Cookson talking about this design earlier today in class. I think that it is definitely difficult to place this guy on a timeline. That isn't neccessarily a bad thing, but it could make for a slightly mixed reception of the concept. As for overhauling the entire design, I don't think that's a good idea for two reasons: 1. It's a solid design for the most part and 2, there are only 6 weeks left until the end of class. I think what you have here is about 90% of what you need. Honestly, the only thing that bothers me about the design is that coiled cable with the box on his hip - it just doesn't seem to fit the rest of the aesthetic. That being said, I like what you've done with the colors, though you might want to consider repeating that reddish hue in a few other places (maybe an accent on the shoulder strap, or the beads on his head-piece or his bracelet). I think that would help tie the design together a little better. As a final thought, I like the bulk of the object on his hip, but I think it needs to be something else - perhaps a satchel or something.
